The SK Hynix 500 GB SSD SURVIVED A LAPTOP FIRE!
Here's the story:
I had put this SSD into a Dell Latitude laptop. At about the same time I replaced the laptop's battery with an aftermarket battery. The battery appears to have had a defect. It exploded inside the laptop while the laptop was on and the battery was charging. This explosion resulted in a fire that burned inside the laptop. The fire also caused a sofa to catch fire and burn with 4-5 foot high flames. While the fire was burning, the laptop was moved away from flammable materials and placed on a tile floor. The laptop continued to burn with a 2-3 foot high flame until it was put out using a fire extinguisher. The flames were coming from the battery compartment and also may have been from vent openings in the laptop case. The new SK Hynix SSD drive was inside the laptop through the entire event.
A few days later I removed the hard drive from the laptop. I removed it because the drive could contain personal data and there was a possibility of a fire or insurance investigator taking the laptop for evidence. It was difficult to remove because the laptop case was melted and warped. Out of curiosity I decided to see if I could get the SK Hynix drive into an external enclosure and see what it would do if I connected it to a USB port.
The SATA connectors were a little loose on the drive, probably from all the heat of the fire. They were able to be plugged into the SATA port on the drive enclosure. Once it was in, it was time for the moment of truth. When the USB cable of the enclosure was plugged into a different laptop would anything happen? Would it brick the enclosure or crash the laptop?
I took a breath and and plugged the enclosure into a free USB slot. I held that breath and waited... and... a new drive letter appeared in 'My Computer'. After a few seconds of scanning, directories and files appeared under the drive letter. The drive works! I couldn't believe it. I copied a photo to the drive and it made it without error. I double clicked the photo, it opened without a glitch.
It had been a few days since I had taken a backup of the laptop that caught on fire. I was able to retrieve files that had been added or changed since the backup without problem. I copied another 125 GB off the drive just to see if it would work. The entire transfer was error free. I'm still amazed as I type the story. Of course I won't use this drive as a primary drive any more. The fire may have unpredictable effects on the drive's lifespan in the long term. But that's beside the point - the drive survived!
Would I buy this drive again? Absolutely, without hesitation. I'm totally impressed that it survived a laptop fire that was so bad it had to be put out with a fire extinguisher. On top of it all, the SK Hynix SSD was purchased for about $35 less than the cost of a Samsung 850 Evo. Forget other brands, I'm now firmly in the SK Hynix fan club.
