Setting up the drive was easy. I just followed the instructions that came with it which said to download the TNAS-PC program from their web site to my Windows 10 laptop. I installed 1 4TB Seagate Ironwolf RED NAS hard drive in it configured as a "Single" HDD. The NAS can accommodate up to a 12TB drive in each of its two slots for a total of 24TB. If you add two identical drives, you can configure them as a RAID 0 or RAID 1 depending on your needs. Or you can make them JBOD, just a bunch of drives.
It has a variable speed fan that is super quiet. Also you can enable a sleep function to save on energy during times of inactivity. I also attached a Seagate 4TB USB portable hard drive I had laying around to the USB 3.0 port on the back of the TNAS. It maps to drive letters just like the internal drives do and speeds are similar. This drive is also shared across the network for additional storage.
There are many applications available to download onto the unit once logged into the TNAS desktop using a browser. I installed the PLEX app for serving music and video media. This worked from my Smart TVs, computers and phone just fine. I stored my digital camcorder videos in a folder of the NAS and they play very nicely on the TV over the network.
The FTP server feature that comes with this NAS works great for storing security camera videos and snapshots.
The remote access is great and makes all this storage available to use from remote locations or from your phone while away. Using the TNAS app on my phone, I retrieve files from the TNAS using remote access which enables me to use files I reference without using up my phone memory.
The user interface on the TNAS desktop is very intuitive and easy to use. The control panel applet makes changing the configuration a breeze.
About 3 months later I installed the 2GB RAM expansion for a total of 4GB. I was expecting an increase in file transfer speed but as it turns out my network seems to be the choke point and the extra memory did not help the speed. My speeds average about 40MB/sec read and about 36MB/sec write. With a better network I'm sure it would come closer to the published 110MB/sec speeds.
One if the things I really appreciate about this NAS is it is so reliable and always available on the network like it should be. I have used other manufacturer’s NAS devices that would just disappear and re-appear at random. The Terra-master NAS is solid and always there.
On occasion I’ve contacted the Terra-master customer support with questions. They are excellent at getting back within about 24 hours with a response to my questions. They are genuinely interested in keeping you as a happy customer. This is a BIG plus for me.

I had to format it before putting it in this system. TerraMaster then setup its OS and it was a pleasant setup experience. After about 5 min of using the software the system crashed. Tried it again and again it crashed.
Pulled my hard drive out of there and tried to format it again and may other things only to discover that the drive that worked perfectly before using this unit now is dead.
Be very careful when purchasing this as I have returned it to amazon for a refund but I am now out $150.00 because I have to by a new WD Red 4tb Hard Drive. Well never buy another TerraMaster product again.

The packaging was excellent, and the box even included a pretty substantial Philips screwdriver for screwing the hard drives into their trays. The same screwdriver also can be used to remove the fan to add a memory upgrade - more about that later. So, if you buy this, you will not need any additional tools. Note that I realize that Terra Master no longer officially supports end-user memory upgrades, but the slot is there and pretty easily accessible.
The device's cover is very substantial, made of a nice thick metal. The front silver-colored faceplate is a delicate plastic and easily scratched. The device is rather small compared to a similar QNAP or Synology - maybe a little wider, but barely taller than the hard drive sleeve itself. The hard drive sleeves are of a rather cheap feeling plastic. I installed two Seagate Ironwolf drives. I did have a metallic buzzing noise coming from the casing, which I was eventually able to make go away by reseating the hard drive trays.
A word of caution: I did a memory upgrade from the standard soldered-in 2 GB to 4 GB total, with the addition of a 2 GB memory 204-pin SODIMM, but it was not without issues. Much of the literature on the internet specifies either a 1.35v 1600 MHz card or a 1.35v 1333 MHz card, and I watched a You-Tube how-to video where the guy upgraded with a 1600 MHz card, but I could only get the 1333 to work. I put the 1600 in before initializing the device, and it powered on and the fan came on, but the hard drive lights remained amber and there was no LAN activity, and no start-up beep. I removed the memory, and the device booted up normally with a LAN connection and a beep. I shut it off, installed the 1333 MHz ram, and again it booted up properly. I then initialized it, installed TOS and apps, and the device was recognizing the memory correctly and everything was great. BTW, boot up is VERY fast with the GUI usable and ready for log-in just a couple minutes after starting up the NAS. This is the fastest NAS by far that I have, to boot up and log into.
I then thought, well maybe I didn't have the first memory card seated properly, so I removed it and replaced it with an identical 2 GB 1600 SODIMM I had, and again, hard drive lights stayed amber, no beep, and no boot up. At this point, as mentioned above, the device had already been initialized, TOS installed, and was usable. I put a 1333 back in, and got a full boot up with no issues. All of these cards were Crucial brand and all purchased new here on Amazon.
The memory upgrade was tougher than it looked physically, too. See pictures - the face plate to the device has these three "teeth" that prevent you from inserting the memory at an angle and pressing it down and into the socket. You need to remove the two screws on either side of the memory socket to loosen the face plate enough where you can gently push it back far enough to give you enough clearance to push the memory down into its socket.
The TOS that this NAS uses is very clean, easy to install, and perfect for an NAS newbie who doesn't demand a huge amount of features but needs all the basic stuff. I found the interface to be very polished and quick - not as capable overall as QNAP's or Synology's, and not nearly as many settings or options, but was slicker and quicker than either. You can also expand it to take over your entire desktop instead of a window within it. I have to give Terra Master credit for one thing - the setup process couldn't have been easier or better designed - very Synology-esque in its simplicity and speed, and very easy for an inexperienced NAS user to get through without help.
Overall, a nice device for mainstream needs, and it feel well made and polished. I haven't used many of the features yet, but there is nowhere near the app selection that you have with Synology or QNAP, but then, many users don't need all those capabilities. I also noticed the TOS stays logged in, unlike either my Synology or QNAP web-GUIs.

Now, if I can figure out how to easily copy files to the Plex Server I will be in great shape, but that's a Plex issue unrelated to the NAS. Fortunately the NAS has a USB slot that Plex can "see" that I'm using to install my media.

Setup was a bit quirky for me. There are no instructions with the unit other than the website where to start. I found the youtube videos by 3rd parties to be the most informative on setup as well as installing more RAM. The manufacturers website is lacking for instructions. There is little to no other information out there or troubleshooting info on this unit.
Be aware that when you buy this unit, you need to buy at least one hard drive. ....so there is more money. I haven't bought the 2gb ram module, but I think it would be worth the $20.
Once I had the hard drive installed, getting into the system was awkward too. The IP address kept changing on me which made it difficult to get to the system from the web browser. (Also, getting to the system via a web browser isn't mentioned in the instructions, not from what I saw. But rather, I found out about by watching the 3rd party video.)
The unit went through a check of the hard drive to make sure it was good. This appeared to get stuck as well. I waited about 30 minutes, thinking that because I had a large drive that it was going to take awhile. I finally closed the web browser and opened it again and the hard drive instantly read as good and allowed me to continue to the next step.
Another part about the setup of this unit is that you need to download and install the operating system (called TOS). It is available on the TerraMaster website and the setup allows for automatic download and install. It also allows for manual install, if you have already downloaded the TOS, like I had. When installing, the system says it will take 10 minutes. It also says not to refresh the screen during this install. After 10 minutes, It appeared to be stuck at 60%. I waited another 15 minutes. The NAS didn't appear to be doing anything and the hard drive light wasn't flashing as though there was activity. I refreshed the page and the operating system was installed. From that point on, it has been a learning curve. I was able to plug in my 4tb USB drive to the unit and move files around.
I haven't been able to map the network drive from the NAS to my computer....and can't figure out why. I am sure that it is an easy fix, but like I said before, for the techie, I am sure this is all a no-brainer... For the average user, it hasn't been simple or straight forward.
UPDATE: The plex server was slow. It was painful to try to watch a movie from any device in my house as the movie would stop and have to load at various points. Going through my computer based plex server was fine playing the same movie. The problems with the plex server and the pain it was to setup, I just returned it.
