商品の説明
Fans of both artists and their respective genres will finally be able to get their hands and ears on a very special release: The long-awaited SCO-MULE album. In late September of 1999, John Scofield teamed with Gov't Mule, then featuring original bass player the late Allen Woody, along with keyboardist Dr. Dan Matrazzo, in Georgia for two legendary shows of mind-bending live prowess, featuring material ranging from Mule and Scofield original compositions, to James Brown covers and songs made legendary by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. No audience or soundboard bootleg recordings of these shows exist. But now, for the first time, fans can experience the Sco-Mule mystique first- hand in album form, newly mixed and mastered. This 2.5 hour all-instrumental release is a jazz romp laced with rock, soul & funk.

This double-CD album, just released this year, was recorded live at back to back concerts in Athens and Atlanta, Georgia, on September 22 and 23rd, 1999. The original personnel of Govt. Mule was still intact. (Bass player Woody died the following year.) Govt. Mule had started as a spillover band from three members of the reconstituted Allman Brothers band: they all had strong credentials in playing the hardy rock-blues the Allmans had made their own. But from the start, Govt. Mule had experimented –with other formats, personnel (listen to their 2-CD album from 2013, Shout!) and musics-- so adding guitarist John Scofield to the mix for all instrumental concerts wasn’t as much of a stretch as it might have been for another rock band. Besides, Scofield has played blues as long or longer than he has jazz and he has released four albums with funk-rock-jazz trio Medeski Martin and Wood.
Guitarist Warren Haynes introduced himself to Scofield one night at Sweet Basil’s in New York. He said, “Why don’t we play together some time?” Scofield said “Sure” and the next thing you know there they were, spending a day rehearsing and then two performing in front of enthusiastically appreciative Deep South audiences.
If you liked the 50s-60s organ-guitar trios –Jimmy Smith, Big John Patton, etc.-- you’ll love this music. Haynes and Scofield are both bears on their ax. They play off each extraordinarily other well, playing a funky hybrid music that is infectious: great solos against a near-continuous battery of sound, and a beat that never ends. (Matt Abts is a great rock drummer.) Dr. Dan Matrazzo, who played with the Allman Brothers band, joins them: another musician who doesn’t seem to care whether he’s playing jazz, blues or rock –it’s all grist to the mill for this band. They play a tune by Scofield, four by Haynes, two by James Brown (“Doing It to Death” and “Pass the Peas”), and one each by Wayne Shorter (“Tom Thumb”) and Mongo Santamaria (“Afro-Blue”). On two cuts, an additional guitarist is added though it makes little difference to the sound.

Super son, un mélange génial. Cet album change des autres par son ingéniosité.
A posséder et à écouter en boucle.
Bravo !
