In meiner engeren Wahl standen:
Voll-Format:
Nikon AF-S 28-300mm F3,5-5,6 ED VR
Tamron AF 28-300mm F3,5-6,3 XR Di VC LD ...
APS-C Format:
Nikon AF-S DX 18-300mm F3,5-5,6 ED VR
Sigma 18-250mm F3,5-6,3 DC Macro OS HSM
Tamron 18-270mm F3,5-6,3 DI II VC PZD

Tamron AF28-300mm F/3,5-6,3 XR Di VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro für Nikon

Guter Allrounder.

28-300 for a DX camera????
This lens receives mixed reviews as it is not a professional lens. Many of the poor reviews should be dismissed, those people should not have strayed from their £1500 f/2.8 stratto lenses - what did they expect?
I wanted a 'walk about' lens for my DX Nikon and couldn't stretch to the £500+ for the nikon of this focal range. Why wasn't I looking at one of the miriad 18-??? lenses designed for DX cameras or even the new Tamron 16-300? Well, reading between the lines and studying the reviews, I suspect these would not quite match the image quality I require. They step just a bit too far into the extremes of what is possible. I hasten to add that I haven't tried any of them and so I may be wrong. So why did I risk buying this? and why do I think 28-300 is any good on a DX sensor when most would have you believe that 28mm isn't wide enough?
Firstly I should explain that I don't often view my pictures larger than A4 or more usually a computer monitor so I will naturally not notice some defects apparent on larger prints or media. Secondly, my definition of a walk about lens might not be the same as others and thirdly, I can just about afford to take a risk at what this lens cost me but not at £500+.
So, this term 'walk about lens'! I am not looking for a lens that will be the only lens I have access to such as someone going on holiday and packing light might. I will still have other lenses in my bag for when I need them. I wanted a lens for when I'm out, often with my family, and just don't know what I'll be photographing next. I guessed that 28-300 with fewer compromises over the 18 (or 16) - ??? might do it. I have so far been proved right. The sort of subjects that require instant access to 300mm tend to be fleeting and are gone if you have to change lenses whereas the subjects requiring wider angles than 28mm seem to still be there when you've dug the right lens out and put it on. Also, 28mm is still quite wide, it's wider than 70mm or 55mm isn't it? Also 18mm isn't as wide as 16mm or 12mm etc etc, so it's a matter of where you draw the line. I'm usually quite happy with 28mm.
So what's the image quality like then. It's very good actually. If you're happy with a quality Nikon kit lens you'll be fine with this. It is about as good as my 18-105 VR. Just as with that lens, it is usable at any aperture for most of it's range and just needs stopping down a little to get the best from it at the long end. Obviously there is distortion and some abberations but they are not obtrusive most of the time and for the times they are I either use a different lens or correct in post processing.
The VC is very good also. Tamrons system works differently to Nikons VR in that it works from when you have half pressed the shutter rather than doing its magic only once you fully depress it. This means you see the effect in the viewfinder and it is good to see. I have no figures for its effectiveness but it is certainly useful in the circumstances when VR/VC come to your aid. My experience is that this is more often than theory would suggest it should but then I tend to photograph static subjects so it maybe would.
Any down sides. The autofocus motor is an older micro motor type so it is noisier than my AFS lenses though it has never been too noisy. It is also not a quick as you might need if you do a lot of sports or fast moving subject shooting. The VC also makes a noise which was noticeable when I first tried it in a quiet room at home but after getting outside I realised after that I had not even remembered that it made a noise. The photo attached shows what it can do. This was taken at 300mm and f/9.
