An authoritative book published in collaboration with Christie’s, featuring photographs of the Bergé Saint Laurent collection in situ, complete with estimated value information and final auction prices. In February 2009, 733 pieces from Pierre Bergé’s and Yves Saint Laurent’s art collection—one of the world’s largest private collections—was auctioned off in a record-breaking sale of the century. Modern paintings, baroque bronzes, antique silverware, statues, cameos, and minerals comprise this diverse collection that furnished the pair’s two luxurious residences in Paris, and included major works by Picasso, Brancusi, Matisse, Mondrian, in addition to furniture by the Art Deco masters Eileen Gray and Jean Dunand. Many works sold for prices far exceeding the highest estimates. The five-volume catalog published by Christie’s for the event sold out before the end of the auction, leaving collectors and art connoisseurs the world over empty-handed. This new book features one hundred of the most important pieces from the collection with detailed commentary by Christie’s experts. An introduction by Christie’s vice president François de Ricqlès revisits the intense three-day auction at the Grand Palais. An appendix includes images of the works sold, accompanied by their estimated values and final auction prices. Publication coincides with the auction of the collection from their Château Gabriel property in November 2009.

Fantastic book. First, I was not sure if I should get this book because I have already bought "The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Berge". I'm so glad that I did. Each book has it own strength. This book is more about the individual item. It gives you a close up look with more background information. The quality of the book is very good. I'm so glad that I did not miss this book.

I already owned The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge, which shows their homes in terms of interior design and living spaces so this was a logical companion volume. I love the way this book shows the artworks in detail, and in their setting within the homes of St. Laurent and Berge. The photographs are superb and the paper is luxurious, in keeping with the quality of the collection. This book is about the artworks themselves, and includes details of provenance for each piece, as well as information about how the piece was acquired in some cases, the history of the object or artist, or thoughts on it. While it's not in-depth, it satisfied me as an art historian and lover of art, and it also was a beautiful and even touching look inside the world shared by these two extraordinary men. There may never be a private collection of this calibre again. The book also gives you a sense of the world of art sales, the rarefied air of the big auction houses that most of us can only read about. It also shows how people can live intimately with beautiful objects.

The film Amour Fou, which I watched on Netflix, uses the preparation for this sale as a framework for the story of their love affair and life together, and adds some depth to my understanding of them.

Pierre Berge is an inspiration to me, in the way he wanted to set these artworks free to live again, rather than keep them for himself. It's a testament to the man, and to the life and interests he shared with Yves Saint Laurent.

It is a catalog that displayed and sold a collection of great Earthly beauty in its highest form. What a collection these two had! It will never be duplicated, but this book is the only place where these pieces exist together again from this day on.
